Struggling households need more help with bills, energy industry says

Struggling households need more help with their bills this winter, the energy industry has said, calling on the government to step in for those most in need.

Higher energy costs in the coming months mean many families on low incomes could face difficult choices between heating and other essentials, industry representatives warned.

The industry is pressing for more targeted support, such as discounts for vulnerable customers, rather than broad measures that apply to every household.

“Without extra support, some households will spend this winter choosing between staying warm and putting food on the table.”

Charities have reported a rise in people seeking help with energy debt, and many suppliers say arrears among customers remain stubbornly high.

“Suppliers can do a lot, but the scale of need means government support has to be part of the answer,” said a spokesperson for one industry body.

The government said it was already providing help through existing schemes and would keep its approach under review as winter approaches.

Consumer groups echoed the call for further assistance, urging ministers to make sure support reaches those who need it most quickly.

Energy prices remain higher than they were before recent global supply shocks, and analysts say bills are unlikely to return to earlier levels in the near future.

Suppliers have also called for a longer-term plan to address affordability, arguing that one-off payments offer only temporary relief and that a more sustained approach is needed to protect those most at risk of falling behind.

Households worried about their bills are being encouraged to contact their supplier early to discuss payment plans and check eligibility for help.
